A recent study reported in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology (March 5, 2019) revealed that statin drugs used to lower blood cholesterol levels increase the risk of insulin resistance and high blood glucose levels by diabetes by 38 percent (ref. 1) This is not surprising for two reasons: (1) the findings are consistent with previous reports on the subject; and (2) in a 2017 report of 684 patients in the general population of New York metropolitan area, my colleagues published direct and incontrovertible evidence for the fact that raised levels of both the blood insulin and glucose levels directly lead to the development of diabetes (of Type 2, the main type of diabetes) (ref. 2) .
The study authors (ref. 2) recognized the following theoretical mechanisms which might underlie the link between statin drugs and increased risk of diabetes: (1) decreased insulin-mediated cellular glucose uptake (insulin resistance, in simply words) and (2) decreased
isoprenoid synthesis which causes downregulation of glucose transporter 4 and leads to hyperglycaemia and hyperinsulinemia, and (3) reduced factors such as coenzyme Q10, farnesyl pyrophosphate, and dolichol leading to altered insulin secretion/resistance.

For people with type 1 diabetes (and Dr Majid Ali Diabetes some people with type 2 diabetes) this means taking insulin. People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin to control diabetes–and this can only be done through multiple injections or by an insulin pump, a small device that delivers insulin continuously throughout the day.

We can focus on lowering blood sugar and die young, or focus on lowering blood insulin level and live longer. We can keep insulin low and have less diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Or, we can keep insulin high and have more diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
