What Is Homeostasis?
Homeostasis is best considered a steady internal state of equilibrium in living beings – people, animals, and plants. It is created, preserved, and protected by a natural resistance of life forms to change in the optimal conditions.
I considered study of homeostasis of any element, substance (hormones, messengers, metabolites, etc.) as my top priority in all matters of health/diease/disease continuum. All homeostatic mechanisms have at least three central components which are exquisitely integrated and functionally for the specific factor (variable) being regulated: (1) a receptor; (2) a control centre; and (an effector).
The receptor is the sensing component that monitors and responds to changes in the environment, either external or internal. An effector is the target — a cellular population, a biologic system, or other discrete functions. An effector is the target acted on, to bring about the change back to the normal state.
