Bowel-Mouth Fermentation and Pyostomatitis Vegetans
Majid Ali, M.D.
Pyostomatitis vegetans is a particularly nasty form of oral fermentation. It is one ugly face of bowel fermentation which may be labeled as inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s colitis, ulcerative colitis, persistent and advanced form of the irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammation of the gut associaated with chemotherapy.
Pyostomatitis vegetans is characterized by severe inflammation and ulceration of the mouth with inflammatory nodule formation. Steroid therapy is usually necessary for short period of time. A more important goal of treatment is to detect and treat all factors that cause fermentation in the colon and the mouth.
