Seed, Feed, and Weed for Bowel Health Part 1 – Wise Words About the Bowel
Majid Ali, M.D.
As the bowel, so the immune system. With these simple words, I summarize my view of the inter-relationships between the immune system and the bowel. In saying so, of course, I validate the views of some sages of the past eras. Here are some of their wise words:
✪ Death begins in the colon.
—An ancient saying
✪ “As long as a person exercises and exerts himself a lot, takes care not to eat to the point of being completely full, and keeps his bowels soft, illness will not come upon him and his strength will increase.”
—Maimonides, Hilchot Deot 4:15, 12th Century
✪ To cure chronic illness, England’s Dr. Thomas Syndren prescribed trips on trotting horses. “I began to ride 2 or 3 hours every day,” Thomas Jefferson wrote to a friend. “While President… it was some time before the effects was sensible, because it takes time to strengthen the bowels, but in about a year I was completely cured, and am now perfectly well. “Go thou and do likewise.”
—U.S. News & World Report, May 1,2000
✪ America is a constipated nation…. If you pass small stools, you have to have large hospitals.
— Denis Burkitt, Irish physician
